How it works
Design consultation and zone planning
The electrician surveys the bathroom layout and identifies the electrical zones (Zone 0 inside the bath/shower, Zone 1 directly above, Zone 2 extending 0.6m out, and outside zones). Each fitting is planned to comply with the zone in which it will be installed. The number and position of downlights, fan, mirror, and shaver socket are agreed with the customer.
First fix — cable routing
Before tiling and plastering, the electrician runs all cables to their positions — feeds for downlights, fan, heated mirror, shaver socket, and underfloor heating thermostat. Cables are clipped, protected, and concealed within walls and ceiling voids. Back boxes are fitted at switch and socket positions.
Second fix — fitting installation
After tiling and decoration, the electrician returns to install the final fittings — IP65 rated downlights, extractor fan, heated mirror, shaver socket transformer unit, and underfloor heating thermostat. Each fitting is checked for correct IP rating for its zone.
Underfloor heating connection
If electric underfloor heating is included, the heating mat cold tail is connected to the thermostat, the floor sensor is wired, and the supply circuit is connected. The thermostat is programmed with the customer's preferred schedule. Insulation resistance of the heating mat is tested before and after tiling.
Testing and certification
All circuits are tested to BS 7671 standards — insulation resistance, earth continuity, polarity, and 30mA RCD operation. Each fitting is tested individually and as a complete system. An Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) is issued, and Part P notification is submitted to Building Control.
What's included
What's involved
A bathroom electrics package covers all the electrical work needed for a new bathroom or bathroom renovation. This typically includes an extractor fan, recessed LED downlights (IP65 rated for wet zones), a heated demister mirror, a shaver socket, and connections for electric underfloor heating. Bathrooms are classified as special locations under BS 7671, with strict zone requirements dictating what equipment can be installed and where. A complete bathroom electrical package ensures all components are installed safely, tested together, and certified in a single visit.
Bathrooms are classified as special locations under Section 701 of BS 7671 because the combination of water, wet skin, and electricity creates a significantly higher risk of electric shock. All electrical work in bathrooms is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations — it must be carried out by a qualified electrician registered with a competent person scheme. Zone regulations dictate exactly what equipment is permitted at each distance from the bath or shower, and all circuits must have 30mA RCD protection. DIY electrical work in bathrooms is both illegal and extremely dangerous.

How long does it take?
1-2 days depending on scope. First fix typically takes half a day to a full day. Second fix takes half a day. Allow for a gap between first and second fix for tiling and plastering.
Regulations & safety
Safety notice
Standard light switches must not be installed inside a bathroom — use pull-cord switches inside or plate switches mounted outside the bathroom door. This is a BS 7671 requirement because wet hands on a plate switch create an electric shock risk.
Never install a standard 13A socket outlet in a bathroom. The only permitted socket is a shaver socket with an isolating transformer conforming to BS EN 61558-2-5. This provides galvanic isolation that prevents electric shock even with wet hands.
All light fittings within Zone 1 (above the bath or shower up to 2.25m) must be rated at least IP65. Using a non-rated fitting in a wet zone can cause short circuits, corrosion, and electric shock.
Electric underfloor heating mats must be tested for insulation resistance before the floor covering is laid. Once tiled over, a damaged mat is extremely difficult and expensive to access. The test must be recorded on the certificate.
BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 — Section 701 (Bathrooms)
Section 701 defines the zone system for bathrooms. Zone 0 (inside bath/shower): only SELV equipment allowed. Zone 1 (directly above bath/shower to 2.25m): minimum IPX4, only fixed equipment on SELV or protected circuits. Zone 2 (0.6m beyond Zone 1): minimum IPX4, shaver sockets with isolating transformer permitted. All circuits must have 30mA RCD protection.
Part P of the Building Regulations (Approved Document P)
All electrical work in bathrooms is notifiable under Part P, regardless of scope. Even replacing a light fitting or adding a shaver socket must be carried out by a registered competent person or inspected by Building Control.
Building Regulations — Approved Document F (Ventilation)
Part F requires mechanical extract ventilation of 15 litres per second (intermittent) in bathrooms. If the bathroom has no openable window, an extractor fan is mandatory and must be connected to run with the light or independently via a humidistat.
BS EN 60598 — Luminaire Safety
All light fittings in bathrooms must carry the correct IP (Ingress Protection) rating for their zone. Downlights in Zone 1 must be rated at least IP65 (dust-tight and protected against water jets). Fittings in Zone 2 must be at least IPX4.
What to expect
Frequently asked questions
We’re happy to answer all your questions.
Can I have spotlights above my shower?
Yes, provided they are rated at least IP65 and installed on a circuit with 30mA RCD protection. IP65 rated downlights are dust-tight and protected against water jets, making them suitable for Zone 1 (above the shower). Your electrician will specify the correct IP-rated fittings for each position.
Can I have a normal socket in the bathroom for my electric toothbrush?
No. Standard 13A sockets are not permitted in bathrooms under BS 7671. The only socket allowed is a shaver socket with an isolating transformer, which can also charge electric toothbrushes. These sockets provide galvanic isolation that prevents electric shock. For higher-power appliances like hairdryers, use a socket outside the bathroom.
Do I need to rewire my bathroom for a renovation?
Not necessarily. If the existing wiring is in good condition and correctly rated, the electrician can extend or modify the existing circuits. However, very old wiring (rubber-insulated or without an earth conductor) will need replacing. The electrician will assess the existing installation during the survey and advise whether a full rewire or partial modification is appropriate.
What are bathroom electrical zones?
BS 7671 divides bathrooms into zones based on distance from the bath or shower. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower tray. Zone 1 is directly above the bath/shower up to 2.25m height. Zone 2 extends 0.6m horizontally beyond Zone 1. Outside zones is everywhere else. Each zone has specific rules about what equipment and IP ratings are permitted.
Can I install underfloor heating in a bathroom myself?
You can lay the heating mat yourself (following the manufacturer's instructions), but the electrical connection must be made by a qualified electrician. The connection involves a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, thermostat wiring, and floor sensor installation — all of which are notifiable under Part P in a bathroom. The electrician will also test the heating mat's insulation resistance before and after tiling.
